Win Edwards Delivery SuiteThrough her skill and care as a nursing sister at the Hawkesbury Hospital for over 40 years, Sr Edwards attended more that 6,000 mothers and babies during a thrity-four year period. From 1931-1934 Sr Edwards undertook psychiatric nurse training at Parramatta Psychiatric Hospital and later Midwifery at the Royal Hospital for Women, Paddington and Trescillian nursing at Petersham. She worked from the Craignish Maternity Hospital in Ross Street, Windsor where, from 1944 until 1969, women from the local area and beyond, had their babies in a family-like atmosphere. Craignish was sold in 1969 to the NSW Health Commission. At the time of its sale, Craignish was the last private maternity hospital in NSW. During her career, Sr Edwards was an advocate for progressive midwifery and encouraged methods of care which gave family members the opportunity to get to know their newborn. By the 1960's and 1970's, the babies Sr Edwards delivered early in her career were having children of their own, which she also delivered. She was well-known throughout the district as a caring and compassionate person who would never turn a woman away. Sr Win Edwards was awarded the Hawkesbury Citizen of the Year Award in 1988 which she considered a great honour for doing what she loved - being a good midwife and doing her best for mothers and babies.
