Referral Process

General Practitioners who assess and determine that their patient requires emergency department intervention or assessment should telephone the triage nurse/medical officer-in-charge or the shift to plan for their patient's arrival at the Emergency Department.

For patients requiring a VMO consultation (an appointment / assessment as per clinical need) please see our VMO directory for specialties and contact details of all HDHS VMOs. Alternatively, contact the HDHS switchboard to be put in contact with the VMO.

Good communication between a patient's GP and the hospital usually results in smooth referral processes however, should any difficulties arise in referring a patient to Hawkesbury District Health Service, please contact the Emergency Department's Director of Medical Services during business hours. For issues that require attention outside business hours, the After Hours Assistant Director of Nursing will assist you.

Hawkesbury District Health Service (HDHS) is a ‘smoke free’ organisation.

From 4th May 2011 all public & private patients presenting at or admitted to Hawkesbury Private Hospital will be assessed for nicotine dependence, indicating the level of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), if any, which will be necessary during their stay. This will form part of the standard admission process at HDHS.

To assist patients in meeting the smoke free requirements during their stay at HDHS and to decrease the effects of nicotine withdrawal, NRT patches and NRT lozenges will be made available to nicotine dependant inpatients.

Supplying relevant patients with a PBS approved prescription for NRT prior to admission, or as soon as practical following discharge along with referral for cessation counselling is likely to lengthen their period of abstinence, increase their quit chances and reduce their out of pocket expenditure on NRT.

If you require further information about this health initiative designed to improve the health and safety of the Hawkesbury community please contact Elsa Reid on 45605714 or hdhsenquiries@chcs.com.au
